The Curse Of Cursive
Penmanship, like hieroglyphics and the IBM Selectric, has lost its purpose. Let's erase it for good. In all my years of school, there was only one time I cried in class. It was the first week of first grade—Mrs. Scougie's room—and we were learning cursive. Q. I hated the letter. But it wasn't that I couldn't get the strokes right. It was the way I held my pencil: with four fingers around the base, not three—an apparent crime against writing protocol....
Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Development Kit 1.7 (#14)
The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Development Kit facilitates building ink-enabled applications for Tablet PC. The combination of software and hardware in a Tablet PC enables these methods of user interaction and allows for a rich, interactive, and productive computing experience for users. The Tablet PC platform encompasses Windows XP and its extensions that enable input and output of handwriting and speech data on a Tablet PC as well as interchange of this data with other computers. The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Software Development Kit (SDK) enables you to build ink-enabled, pen-enabled, and speech-enabled applications and supporting hardware for the Tablet PC. System Requirements Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Service Pack 2 Visual Studio version 6 with Service Pack 5 or Visual Studio .NET (Both may be installed on the same computer.) Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (recommended) Consult the SDK documentation for more information on system requirements. Note: You must be running Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 to install the Tablet PC Development Kit on a Tablet PC . Note: The Tablet PC Development Kit can be installed on certain non-Tablet PC operating systems (listed above). On these platforms your application can collect ink with the InkCollector class and can be tested and debugged. The InkEdit and InkPicture controls can be used to collect ink on these operating systems when the Tablet PC SDK is installed, but are not able to collect ink on non-Tablet PC systems that do not have the Tablet PC SDK installed. Note: The Tablet PC SDK requires certain files from a later version of the Microsoft Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) than shipped with Visual Studio 6. Please download the latest Platform SDK from MSDN? if you are using Visual Studio 6. Instructions After downloading the setup executable or locating it on your MSDN CD, click the Start button, click Run, and then type drive:\path\Setup.exe where drive is the letter of your the drive containing the setup and path is the path to the setup executable. Click OK. At the welcome screen, click the Next button. Read the license agreement and, if you agree, select "I accept the terms in the license agreement." Click the Next button. Enter the customer information as requested and click the Next button. Select complete or custom (default) installation option, and click Next. Click Install to install the SDK. Click Finish. The SDK installer creates a Tablet PC SDK folder in the Programs menu. This folder contains shortcuts to programming documentation and release notes, as well as sample applications and source code. The source code for the sample applications is installed in the \Program Files\Microsoft Tablet PC Platform SDK\Samples folder. The compiled binary executables for the samples are installed in the \Program Files\Microsoft Tablet PC Platform SDK\Bin folder. You can view the source code and sample applications using the Samples and Source Code shortcut. You can run the Context Tagging tool using the Context Tagging tool shortcut.
PDF Annotator (#3)
PDF Annotator lets the user open any PDF file and add annotations, using the Tablet PC pen, directly on the PDF file's pages. The annotated documents can then be saved directly back to PDF format. In this way, anyone can read or print the annotated PDF documents. Annotated documents can also be easily attached to emails. Previously, annotating, commenting or proofreading a document received for review in PDF file format was possible only by using multiple software products in a row--or only by printing the document and adding comments manually. With PDF Annotator, annotations can also be added in a natural way--using a pen--but everything remains in digital format. PDF Annotator allows commenting of PDF files in a single step. The user no longer needs to print a PDF document to annotate it. A PDF file received for review can be opened in PDF Annotator, commented on the Tablet PC using the pen, then saved back to a PDF file in a single step. This saves both resources and time. With the Tablet PC, a PDF document is treated just like a normal printed document. The user just writes or draws his ideas and thoughts on the existing document. PDF Annotator also lets you insert blank pages to gain more space for your comments. It can be used to fill in forms, and you can even use it for note-taking by creating new blank PDF documents. Tablet Enhancements For Outlook 3.0 (#1)
Tablet Enhancements for Outlook is an add-in for Microsoft Outlook® 2003 and 2007 that turns the popular personal information manager into a fully pen-enabled application on your Tablet PC, UMPC, or Origami device. TEO 3.0 replaces Outlook's standard UI with fully ink-enabled forms and lets you write and keep your notes in your own handwriting. No synchronization required. Rapid One-Handed Data Entry The ability to quickly capture data in meetings, classes, or phone calls is very important. TEO allows you to do this using the same software you use today, resulting in a minimal learning curve and maximum use of the captured data. Microsoft Outlook, out of the box, provides little optimization for the Tablet PC platform. While you can send ink emails using the features of Word 2003, you're stuck using the on-screen keyboard or input panel for other items such as appointments, contacts, tasks, and journal entries. The magic of TEO is that it provides Tablet PC-optimized forms for creating and editing the rest of these items without re-inventing the application. When you create a contact, it is a true Outlook contact with additional ink data attached. You can toggle the TEO view on and off to switch between the standard Outlook view and TEO. If you want, you can strip them item of all ink data and convert it to a standard Outlook item when you're done making the necessary corrections. MapPoint Integration with Contacts and Appointments Use the mapping integration to find out how to get to Bob's office for that lunch appointment you have. You can pan and zoom the map on the location tab and when you found the information you are looking for, add it to your notes and mark it up or set an early reminder to make sure you get to the appointment on time. Ink Data Entry Convenient and accurate handwriting recognition. Convert to text when and if you want to. Improved correction interface allows you to make non-destructive corrections to recognized text more quickly than previous versions. Background recognition means PDA's and other applications work the same with TEO as any other Outlook item. Recognition preview and confidence indicator alerts you of incorrectly recognized text. Note Taking New rich note taking allows mixed ink, text, images, and more. Built in audio recording lets you record conversations, meetings, conference calls and more. Recording and playback embedded right in the Outlook item. Paste text and images from other applications and web pages. A hyperlink is automatically added for clipped web content. Multiple pages of notes and the ability to import Windows Journal documents. Stationery picker allows you to change the background of note pages. Better Organization The Outlook Journal is a great place to keep track of notes, customer interaction, and time spent on jobs. Keep a log of all your phone calls. Skype integration automatically organizes your call notes and links them to contacts. Keep track of research topics using the research highlighter which organizes links to Wikipedia articles in your notes. Stay organized with Outlook categories. TEO can warn you if you forget to categorize an item. Find contacts and map appointment locations with directions using MapPoint integration. Requirements TEO 3.0 requires a Tablet PC, UMPC, or Origami device running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition SP2 or Windows Vista as well as Outlook 2003 or 2007. The Download button connects you directly to a file hosted on the vendor's website.
